Lesson from a birds-eye view

September is filled with excitement…for me anyway. Just after Labor Day, I went to Ft. Collins to talk with our agency’s pilots during some of their training exercises. Yet, I didn’t just get to talk with them, I had the opportunity to take the ride of my life!
As we hovered and buzzed over the mountains near Horsetooth Reservoir I understood what it meant to get a birds-eye view. The pilot explained to me how and why we use helicopters to support the maintenance of Western’s equipment that connects to the grid. He demonstrated what it’s like to scope-out landing areas and what it takes to find the right approach. I saw the world from a new angle, with a 360-degree view from “his office.” But I walked away with more than just the technical elements of helicopter maneuvering. The most valuable lesson I learned from my flight was:

Always keep your eye on the horizon—not only will it keep you from getting sick in the helicopter (thus shortening your trip), but it’s a good motto to live by. If you keep your eye on the future, your steps will keep leading you in that direction. Plus…it’s a great view!
Even though I am back down to walking the office halls and sitting at a computer, I still keep that 500-foot high vision in my head, trying to relate my work as a communicator to that birds-eye view of the territory Western’s system covers.
